The shift from carefree summer days to structured school routines can be a big adjustment for kids (and parents, too!). Here are some simple ways to help ease the transition and set your child up for success:
Start the routine early – Gradually adjust bedtimes and wake-up times a week or two before school starts.
Create a school countdown – Use a calendar or fun checklist to build excitement and prepare for the change.
Organize school supplies together – Let kids pick out their backpack, lunchbox, or pencils to give them a sense of ownership.
Practice the morning routine – Run through what a school morning looks like: getting dressed, eating breakfast, packing up.
Talk about feelings – Acknowledge both excitement and nerves. Let kids know it’s normal to feel both.
Plan fun after-school activities – Knowing something fun awaits after school helps ease the first-day jitters.
Celebrate summer memories – Make a scrapbook or share favorite moments to create closure before starting a new chapter.
Stay positive – Kids take cues from you. Keep the focus on the exciting opportunities ahead!
